Partners in Leadership.
The future of New Zealand’s food and fibre sector will depend not only on innovation, technology and market access, but on the quality of the people who lead it.
That shared belief underpins the newly signed partnership agreement between LIC and New Zealand Rural Leaders. Together, the two organisations are investing in leaders who can help New Zealand navigate an increasingly complex future. Rapid advances in technology, changing consumer expectations, climate adaptation and shifting global markets are reshaping the sector, creating both challenges and opportunity.
LIC’s contribution extends well beyond financial support. Over many years, LIC’s people have participated on programmes such as Kellogg and Nuffield, as presenters, and as mentors – sharing expertise that enriches the learning experience.
From genetics and breeding technologies to international markets, innovation and co-operative leadership, LIC’s contribution broadens participants’ understanding of New Zealand’s food and fibre sector while strengthening connections across the industry.
“Our partnership with Rural Leaders is about much more than sponsorship. It’s an opportunity to connect with emerging leaders and invest in the long-term capability of New Zealand’s agriculture sector. We’re excited to continue building on that over the next three years.”

LIC and Rural Leaders are developing leadership pathways from emerging professionals to future directors and industry leaders. Rural Leaders alumni now serve on company boards, lead organisations, influence policy and strengthen rural communities throughout New Zealand.
“The challenges facing our sector are too significant for any one organisation to tackle alone. Partnerships like the one we share with LIC allow us to combine expertise, develop and deliver exceptional leadership programmes and create lasting value for the food and fibre sector.”

For nearly 50 years, the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme has developed emerging leaders with the confidence, networks and capability to influence their businesses, organisations and communities. For nearly 80 years, the Nuffield New Zealand Farming Scholarships have broadened horizons through international learning, equipping scholars with the insight and foresight to help shape the future of New Zealand agriculture.
Leadership capability lift is a long-term investment. Together, LIC and New Zealand Rural Leaders are helping grow the people who will shape the future of New Zealand’s food and fibre sector, leading resilient businesses, stronger rural communities and a globally competitive industry.
