Engage and Ellett Trust – Fostering stronger links between research and industry

One of the features of the Engage Programme is its adaptability.

The programme was successfully customised for several cohorts of ASB’s Rural Managers in the past, and the latest tailored Engage Programme has been for the Ellett Agricultural Research Trust.

The T.R. Ellett Agricultural Research Trust supports capability building and applied research in the pastoral sector, continuing Trevor Ellett’s legacy.

The Engage programme pilot addressed the growing disconnect between research and on-farm practice—driven by sector reforms and reduced understanding of farm systems.

With an arguably underfunded extension, valuable insights often miss farmers. The pilot built researchers’ confidence in engaging communication and fostered stronger links between research and industry—something the Trust believes is key to a thriving food and fibre sector.

The programme was focused on the communication of science research to farmers in a way that is meaningful and has impact.

The first pilot was attended by participants from AgResearch, B+LNZ and Dairy NZ, who were also partners of the programme along with the Ellett Agricultural Research Trust.

Speakers included Caroline Amyes (MPI), Esther Price (communications expert), Mark Woods and Annabel McAleer and a panel session including Ian Knowles, Robyn Dynes, Derrick Moot and Michelle Pye.

It was the 1st of 2 pilots with the second to be held in Hamilton in October. This will be open to Ellett Trust staff and partner organisations.

The 2 days were interactive and workshop-based, with participants working to improve on their own presentations in real-time, using the tips and tricks shared and gaining a better understanding of key messaging and prioritising high value information.

In addition to improving communication skills and capability, there was a strong focus on investing the time to build solid, trusting relationships within and across the sector to improve the impact those communications have.
